For several years now, Sister Luigi Frigo of Cudahy Wisconsin and her second graders, conduct a science experiment to compare the affects of whole food and genetically modified (GE) foods on mice. Three mice receive nutrition from whole foods while three more receive theirs from foods commonly served in high schools across the country. The results could not be more revealing and border on science fiction. The first time her class conducted the experiment, they observed that the mice fed whole foods gave no indication of any problems with health or disposition while the mice fed GE food within days displayed erratic sleeping behavior and became lazy, nervous, and so antisocial that two of the mice eventually killed and ate the third. Since then, the experiments conducted last only four days however she states that even on the first day of junk food, the mice behavior “changes drastically” and requires two to three weeks on whole foods for their behavior to return to normal. Any attempts to reintroduce GE foods ends in failure as the mice have learned and will no longer consume the GE food.

This study is not unique in its attempt to provide information about the power of food on health. A study in science (December 2002) concluded that “food molecules act like hormones, regulating body functioning and triggering cell division. The molecules can cause mental imbalances ranging from attention-deficit disorder to serious mental illness.” When you reconcile this information with the ever increasing numbers of kids being diagnosed with mental health or “behavioral” disorders, you can’t help but wonder what’s going on. Schools all over the world and especially in Europe have banned GE foods to prevent their children from becoming lab rats in a grand social experiment. In America however GE foods are in a majority of our processed foods with no labeling requirements whatsoever; teaching our kids to read labels and expect the government to look out for us will not keep them healthy. It’s like teaching them that walking in the cross walk gives them the write of way without reminding them to look for traffic; whether you had the right of way or not, if you get hit crossing the street because a truck didn’t yield, you’re still dead. Don’t be fooled; if your seven year old can’t sit still or concentrate and your 13 year old seems to be on an emotional roller coaster, there’s little evidence to support a deficiency in Ritalin or Prozac, even when the media suggests it as a miracle cure. An old Chinese proverb states that whatever the father of illness, the mother is wrong food. For more information about genetically modified foods see seedsofdeception.com

Should we ever desire to see a dramatic improvement in the health of this nation, this is a great place to start. There’s still no proof that vaccinations work while evidence of an overwhelming nature continues to mount making the toxic vaccination soup of aluminum, mercury, formaldehyde and foreign cell proteins injected into our kids every day a primary cause of everything from SIDS to Autism and Alzheimers to Cancer. There’s no better time to become informed than now… your kids are banking on it.

“Children who produce higher fevers, strong rashes and good discharges of mucus and pus, are healthier and more robust and have stronger immune systems than children who produce a low intensity of these symptoms. These robust children vigorously externalized and healed their infections spontaneously, often without antibiotics; they had had little or no antibiotics, antipyretics or vaccinations in their lives. The children who had had all their vaccinations, lots of antipyretics and antibiotics – a lot of suppressive, internalizing medical treatments, these children never got high fevers and were the ones who were more likely to have allergies and autoimmune problems.” (13)

A fever is designed to serve the body and indicates a healthy robust immune and nervous system. Don’t let the fear mongers convince you that your child’s body is weak and in need of outside intervention nor that your instincts don’t matter. Most parents I serve have a sense of what is good for their child and simply need reassurance given all that they hear on television. The power that made their body heals their body! Trust it!

Fever is one of the body’s most powerful infection fighting weapons. In his book, How to Raise A Healthy Child…In Spite of Your Doctor, Dr. Robert S. Mendelsohn, MD writes “If your child contracts an infection, the fever that accompanies it is a blessing, not a curse… fever tells you that the repair mechanisms of the body have gone into high gear. It is something to rejoice over, not to fear… (10) Perhaps equally important, studies show that artificially lowering a fever with drugs such as acetaminophen (Tylenol TM) or aspirin (antipyretics) keeps sick people sick longer. In one particular study doctors gave half a group of patients with the flu, aspirin while the other half were permitted to have a fever. The group taking aspirin to lower their fever stayed sick 3 ½ days longer then the group allowed to naturally maintain it. The paper concluded: “Antipyretics prolong illness in patients with Influenza… The duration of illness was significantly prolonged.” (11) This I hope would be cause for parents to reconsider the common prescription for illness which is to suppress and or remove all signs that the body is working to restore health. One cannot however stop at thinking that reducing fever simply prolongs illness. In another study researchers reported: “There is no convincing evidence that naturally occurring fevers are harmful. In contrast, animal studies have shown that fever helps animals to survive an infection whereas antipyresis (lowering fever) increases mortality…there is considerable…evidence that…human immunological defenses function better at febrile temperatures than at normal ones.” (12) In other words, artificially interfering with your body’s natural immunity in fact opens it up to being overwhelmed to such a degree as to risk death. The body is so intelligent it understands that foreign bacteria cannot live above a certain temperature; to interfere with that process is to make the body weaker and the bacteria stronger.

Dr. Mendelsohn, MD adds that “The human body has a remarkable capacity to heal itself – a capacity that in most cases surpasses anything that medical science can do – and it doesn’t produce unwanted side effects. ”Common sense is the most useful tool in dealing with illness. Your doctor is less likely to employ it than you are, and certainly no more able, because that’s not what they taught him in medical school.” Natural immunity is a blessing that once understood can be nourished by supporting the one system that controls and coordinates it… your nervous system. Have your child checked by a “chiropractor” and never again look to a bottle for answers.

A recent article on page two of the Northfield Hospital Family Health Winter 2009 Newsletter sites opiate use as “eclipsing marijuana as a gateway to the world of illegal drug use” and that according to Charles Reznikoff, MD, an opiate addiction specialist, “pain pills contribute greatly to the opiate addiction he sees. From what I could gather, it appears, Dr. Reznikoff, believes that adolescent risk taking and self medicating to “address untreated mental health disorders, such as anxiety, depression or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder,” are primary reasons for this trend. I can’t help but ask myself at this point, what risk and why not?

What risk is he talking about? By the time we’re 20 years of age, every western citizen has experienced 18,000 hours of advertising. That’s 18,000 hours of opportunities to establish and build on a belief system that perpetually reinforces the idea that you are weak and that your health is dependent on outside sources like drugs for answers. Our country makes up 5% of the worlds population and yet consumes 60% of the world’s drugs, that’s 25 million pills consumed every hour every day every week of every year. This trend is not expected to end any time soon as it’s estimated that in the year 2013, the global market for pharmaceuticals will top $1.0 trillion with the highest growth rate expected in the generic prescription drug market.

How is it that our kids are supposed to understand that there’s any risk whatsoever in popping a few pills to feel good when from infancy they’re taught that all answers are expected to come from a bottle? Self medicating is the rule rather than the exception for if you have a headache, take Tylenol, if you have a runny nose take an antihistamine, if you have an upset stomach take the pink stuff (you know what I’m talking about), if you have allergies take Benadryl, if you’re depressed take Paxil if you’re anxious take Valium if you can’t sit still take Ritalin and if you don’t have any energy, drink coffee until one day you have no reservations about going to the medicine cabinet for a hit of Oxycontin, Percocet, Vicodin or Methodone to take the edge of your stressful day.

Ironically enough, the same article then goes on to suggest the use of Methadone and Suboxone (drugs) as “tools available to manage withdrawal” and that they’re “proven to reduce death from drug overdose and HIV transmission.” I wasn’t quit able to follow the logic but then that’s the point. Do you really believe that the power that transformed two cells at conception into a living breathing human being has now become so inept at birth that the only chance we have at living a long and healthy life is to rely on drugs made by companies that make more money each year than most countries? Why should any child take us seriously when we believe that “to prevent kids from wandering into recreational opiate use and the prospect of addiction” we think the answer lies not in nurturing the bodies self healing power but in “disposing of all pain pills and controlled substances when they have served their purpose or hiding them if they are still needed for legitimate medical use.” Kids using drugs, ‘risky’ as it may be, is only a symptom and until we’re ready to correct the cause, expect the symptoms to get far worse before they ever get better.

There’s no shortage of evidence to show using antibiotics for ear infections makes no difference in outcome; in fact many are reporting that antibiotics given to children actually cause more ear infections. In this particular study, records from 2,089 otitis media patients were examined to determine incidence and treatment success. There was no difference in success rates between antibiotic use and non antibiotic therapies. (8) This study, as it is with most, is focused on whether or not one specific outcome changed or did not change. The danger in this is that no one bothers to ask if this is healthy for the child or not… that’s not relevant data as far as the study goes. As a parent however, I imagine it is relevant thus the reason for sharing this information. The potential for harm to the child is real when you consider antibiotics do not discriminate between good bacteria and bad and your child will be left to suffer the consequences of the indiscriminate killing the bacteria so vital to proper digestion in a growing child.

Not too long ago I was blessed with a chance to help a child avoid having tubes surgically inserted in her ears for chronic ear infections. As I find so often with these children, we found subluxation in her spine and with some gentle adjusting, we were able to help do more than just avoid surgery. Take a moment to hear what her mother had to say as I think it’s a beautiful example of what can come of “turning on the power!”

It was July 10th, Ellie’s one year well baby check up and her first birthday. Everything was looking good, until the doctor looked into her ears. Then those words I had heard 3 times in the last 6 weeks, “Well, it looks like another ear infection.” I groaned. Those words meant more antibiotics, more messy diapers, and a diaper rash that rivals third degree burns. Then the doctor dared to utter the word I feared the most, tubes.

I had made up my mind after my nephew had tubes, two sets before his second birthday, that no child of mine was undergoing surgery for these plastic things. I had heard from friends that their children had to have them put in again two or three times! It is a personal choice every parent must make for themselves and my mind was made up. Ellie is NOT getting tubes.

On the way to fill the prescription I tried to think of ways to avoid the unavoidable. I had heard chiropractors helped the ear to heal itself naturally and without tubes, so that was my ticket. Once home, I called my friend, Catherine, and explained the situation. She immediately told me of this amazing chiropractor her and her family see, and gave me some literature. It turns out this chiropractor is her brother, Dr. Paul Siemers! I had been to chiropractors before and had taken Ellie’s sister, Rachel, to one as an infant to relieve the symptoms of colic. That’s when Catherine told me how much he has done for her whole family. They travel once a week from Mankato to Northfield to see him, so if we wanted to tag along we were more than welcome. So I packed up my whole family and off we went to Northfield to see Dr. Paul.

Well, it’s been almost 3 months and Ellie’s ear infection is gone. The doctor no longer is talking tubes, and Rachel (Ellie’s 3 year old sister) is no longer wetting the bed at night. Plus, I love getting adjusted! I feel better, and have more energy. “Power’s On!” The girls love going to ‘Uncle Paul’s’ to get “justed” as Rachel says. Thank you Dr. Paul for giving me my girls back! The difference in Ellie is amazing. I had forgotten what a good baby she really was until after she had seen Dr. Paul just 2 times! Thank you for everything we have learned from you, and thank you for getting my girls back on track.

Every year roughly 280,000 children under the age of three have ear tube surgery, which is designed to reduce the number of ear infections or drain middle ear fluid that might muffle sounds and hinder language development. Many parents are scared into agreeing to the operation because they’re told it might prevent developmental problems later in life. The facts however, according to the New England Journal of Medicine, do not support such a claim.

Researchers at Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh conducted a study of nearly 400 children and concluded that waiting to implant the tubes had no effect on a child’s performance on language and speech tests at age three or four or six. (7)

This off course being a study designed to observe outcomes related to speech, it does not address the relevancy of doing the surgery at all nor evaluate the damage done when the surgical procedure performed doesn’t even work. This is a subject that is near and dear to me as I have and continue to care for many kids in my office who time and time again are told that antibiotics and surgery are the only solution. My own experience was such that I endured multiple surgeries, the last occurring when I was 17 years of age, whereby I had a skin graph done to patch up the hole left in the protective membrane of my middle ear. Needless to say the consequences have been lifelong, that is until I was introduced to chiropractic.

If you have a baby, grandson, granddaughter, cousin, niece, nephew or even know of a child who is facing surgery, please encourage their parents to have them evaluated for subluxation before making such a profound life altering decision.
